Vieux Carré Property Owners, Residents and Associates Executive Director Search

Vieux Carré Property Owners, Residents and Associates seeks to hire its first Executive Director to manage its operations. He or she will oversee all aspects of the organization, and report to the board of directors. Salary is commensurate with experience. The director will be able to hire an assistant.

VCPORA is a 70 year old organization whose mission is to protect the architectural and historic integrity of the French Quarter, one of the most intact historic neighborhoods in the United States. Its accomplishments have included helping establish the Vieux Carré Commission, conducting numerous planning and land-use studies, successfully opposing the Riverfront Expressway, and, most recently, upholding the de facto hotel moratorium to maintain the neighborhood's residential balance.



The majority of VCPORA's efforts could be considered advocacy and community organizing related; therefore, the applicant for the position must be energetic, diplomatic, passionate, self-motivated and motivational, creative, and savvy. He or she should have excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Contemporary preservation is about far more than the physical preservation of buildings, and as such this job will require the ability to deal with matters including land use, zoning, urban planning, fundraising, event planning, grant writing, membership development and retention, public speaking, law, and administration.

The duties of the Executive Director will include:
  • Develop and implement programming that fulfills VCPORA'S mission, raises the profile of the organization, and generates income
  • In partnership with the board, develop policy and strategy on general and specific advocacy issues and programs and take action
  • Recruit, motivate, and train volunteers
  • Monitor all municipal meetings and legislation with possible impacts on Vieux Carré
  • Generate community support for issues
  • Coordinate membership recruitment and retention
  • Develop outreach programs
  • Contribute to and oversee The Vieux, VCPORA's quarterly newsletter
  • Utilize e-mail alerts for membership and community
  • Develop fundraising strategies, including grant writing and event planning
  • Attend relevant municipal meetings to speak on VCPORA's behalf
  • Attend all board and committee meetings
The Executive Director should have one or more of the following:
  • Experience in preservation or related field
  • Non-profit management experience
  • Broad knowledge of preservation programs and strategies
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteer boards and committees
  • Ability to set priorities and multi-task
  • Computer literacy
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • Grant-writing experience preferred
